Effa and her late husband Benny opened the store in 1961. Pat and Henry later took over ownership, and Mike and Traci have owned it for the last eight years. This third-generation store in central Durban has become a local institution for pet lovers, offering a diverse range of pet-related products and services to the local and surrounding communities.

How It Started
Durban Pets and Aquarium was started with R90 and an out-of-the-blue decision!
It happened one morning after Benny had spent the whole night waiting for his pigeons to come home, when he told his wife, Effa, that he was going to open a pet store. She told him he was crazy, but clearly he had made a good decision!
It has never moved premises in all these years, and Traci still has the original bookkeeping journal!
Meet the Team
Mike
Mike has been involved in serving the pet industry for very close to 30 years.
Together, Mike and Traci took over the reins of a well-established business 8 years ago, and with their new ideas and a renewed energy, they have managed to grow the business substantially over the past eight years.
Traci
Traci started working in the pet shop when she was just a young girl, so has heaps of experience and knows countless clients that have been supporting Durban Pets and Aquarium through the years!
Judy
Judy has been with the company for 12 years, starting with Pat and Henry.
Animals, especially birds and fish, have always held a special place in her heart. She has hand-reared baby birds and keeps tropical fish as pets at home! The passion she feels for nature’s creatures makes this job particularly rewarding for her.
Alfred
Alfred has been at the company for 41 years and has lots of interesting stories to tell, although he keeps those stories close to his heart!
He loves working with the animals and is very happy to be working there!
Moffatt
Moffatt has been at the company for 22 years. He loves working at the pet shop, looking after the chickens, fish, and other animals.
His favourite part is serving the customers and he feels right at home working at the pet shop.
Prudence
Prudence has been working at the company for nearly 13 years.
She loves being part of the team and enjoys working with everyone!
